DRAFFENVILLE – The home softball opener for Marshall County’s Lady Marshals has been a long time coming. But the game promises to be a special one.

Reigning Region 1 champion Lone Oak visits this afternoon for the first game since completion of a new press box and concession stand. The March 28 game against Heath was moved from Marshall County to the Heath field in West Paducah so construction on the new facility could be completed.

The Lady Marshals have played the bulk of their schedule so far in tournaments, at Lone Oak and in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

“I think they’re kind of ready to get back home,” coach Kara Hamby said of her road warriors.

Lone Oak, which was runner-up in last year’s state tournament, has won three straight games against Marshall County, 4-1 May 12 in the Lady Colonel Classic at Hopkinsville, 5-1 two days later at Lone Oak and by a 10-0 score at the Marshall County field in the Region 1 tournament semifinals May 29.

But on April 10 of last year, Buzz Ray’s three-run home run lifted Marshall County to a 5-4 win over the Lady Flash. That was one of only two losses for Lone Oak against region opponents and one of only six overall for the 40-6 team.

“It’s a big game for us,” Hamby said. “They’re the region favorite.”

This year’s Lady Flash are ranked sixth in the state in the April 3 coaches’ poll. Marshall County is ranked 15th. Lone Oak brings an 8-1 record into today’s game, while Marshall County is 7-4.

On Thursday and Friday, Marshall County goes on the road again, at Graves County and then at Union County.
