It’s that time of year again when the citizens of Marshall County begin counting down the days until their own special holiday – a holiday no one else in the world celebrates – Tater Day, which this year falls on Monday, April 7.
This year marks the 171st anniversary of Tater Day, which will begin with initial events on Friday, April 4, and end the following Monday.
The parade, which draws in a crowd of thousands of spectators, will begin at 11 a.m. and will be themed in honor of the men and women serving in the armed forces.
The Benton Kiwanis Club has named Jimmie Lovett, 74, as Grand Marshall of this year’s parade, which initially started in 1842 with the trading and selling of sweet potatoes to boost local agriculture sales.
The Benton Kiwanis Club chose Lovett for the honor because of his service in the U.S. Army and because of his history of involvement with the local celebration.
He has been a part of the Tater Day events for many years, usually smiling from ear to ear while driving his Model A Ford in the parade.
Although the holiday has evolved throughout the years, the holiday still features goods that can be bought and sold. Now though, participants at the event can also enjoy the parade, flea market, arts and crafts, beauty pageants, carnival rides and an assortment of festival food offered at the event.
