Three years ago Zion’s Cause Baptist Church started Upward Soccer. Upward sports is “the world’s largest Christian sports league for children” according to their website. Although Upward Basketball is the most popular in this area, the soccer program is really starting to take off. The league at Zion’s Cause already has 86 members ranging from preschool to fourth grade.

Jason Logsdon and Marty Mitchuson are the directors of the league.

“The goal is to outreach to the kids in the community. I’s not competitive, and we don’t keep score, but they’re able to learn the basic fundamentals.” Mitchuson said. During Upward games every child gets equal playing time, regardless of ability. Instead, the games focuses on fun. rather than a “win-at-all-costs” mentality.

Other churches participate in different Upward sports such as basketball, flag football and cheerleading. Zion’s Cause is the only church that hosts the soccer program and that is one of the reasons there are so many different members of the community participating.

“We only have thirteen members from our church” Mitchuson said. Joining the league is a great way for the kids to make new friends and stay active.

The league runs for about a month. It started on September 3 and will continue until October 1. Kids can join up until the last game. There are three different fields and two games per field each game day. The preschoolers are on one field, kindergarten on another and second to fourth grade on the last field. The registration fee is $60.00, however there are many scholarships available.
