As we continue throughout our summer with barbecues and picnics, knowing where the food came from should always be of importance. There is no easier way to figure that out then buying it from the farmers who grew it themselves.

Every Thursday and Saturday Benton Plaza hosts a Farmer’s Market open to all local farmers. There is no charge to the vendors and it is a great way for people to buy local produce. Every Thursday and Saturday from about 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. you’ll find Nathan English there selling his produce from his farm, which is located just on the outskirts of Benton. English, 22 is currently studying at Murray State University and has been selling his produce for six years at the Benton Farmer’s Market. This January English planted over 700 tomato plants and that’s where most of his focus lies. He is also very concentrated on green beans this year as well. “The quality is better and people like to keep it local,” English said, “We have people drive to the farm a lot too.”

The Farmer’s Market isn’t the only way to shop local. Marshall County also has two regular businesses that sell locally grown food, Harvest Time Market in Benton and KY Hydro Farm LLC, also known as, Wyatt Farms.

Terry and Janice Braggs opened Harvest Time 20 years ago. They grow all their own flowering plants along with most vegetables when in season. The vegetables which are currently grown and available by Harvest Time are tomatoes, cucumbers, yellow squash, zucchini squash, bell peppers, hot peppers, cabbage and okra. They also have green beans, corn, blackberries and potatoes grown by other local farmers. Harvest Time is located at 93 N Main St. in Benton and are open seven days a week.

Matt Wyatt and father Jerry Wyatt operate the six generation, 15 acre family farm located off of Moor’s Camp Hwy. The Wyatt’s have recently started to hydroponically grow many of their vegetables and some of their fruits inside the greenhouses. This enables them to grow and sell produce year round. Produce that is homegrown and for sale at their fruit stand located on the corner of Moor’s Camp Hwy and US Hwy 68 E. includes yellow squash, zucchini squash, bell peppers, a variety of lettuce, a variety of tomatoes, eggplants, okra, corn, green beans and cantaloupes. They will soon have their own hot peppers and spices such as basil and cilantro. Wyatt Farms also sells to multiple local business such as Majestic, the Dinner Bell and Moor’s Resort. They have also started participating in the Farm to School program, not only providing fruits and vegetables but educating the cafeteria staff as well as students. Wyatt Farms is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
