Press Release

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet began work Tuesday to reactivate the traffic signal at the US 641 Spur intersection with KY 58/Mayfield Highway at the west edge of Benton in Marshall County.

Technicians worked hard to complete the reinstallation work by late Tuesday and have it back in service by Wednesday morning. When this signal goes back into service, motorists should take notice of a number of phasing changes that will impact traffic flow through this intersection.

Turn lanes for the main line of The US 641 Spur will have protected/permissive phasing. A green arrow will indicate when turning vehicles will have right of way with oncoming traffic stopped. A flashing yellow arrow will indicate when a left turn is allowed after yielding to oncoming traffic.

KY 58 traffic will be phased so that all traffic on each side alternates. All eastbound through and turn traffic will have green, then all westbound through and turn traffic will have green.

These phasing changes are to allow the signal at the west edge of Benton to function more efficiently. As an added safety feature, double red signals have been added for traffic on the US 641 Spur along with retro-reflective back plates to make the signal heads more visible to approaching motorists.

This intersection has functioned as a 4-Way Stop since the signal support structure failed during a major ice event on February 4th.

Technicians were able to salvage some of the signal heads for use in reconstruction of the signal.

With the signal going back into service, motorists should be alert for changes in traffic flow the new signal phasing will create at this busy intersection. Appropriate caution is required.

This intersection is at US 641 Spur mile point 2.987 and at KY 58 mile point 8.202. Approximately 11,000 vehicles travel through this intersection in an average day.
