Mr. James “Jimmy” E. Mathis, 83, of Benton, died on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Marshall Co. Hospital in Benton.

He was born Thursday, April 16, 1931 in Benton. He was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon for many years. He was also a veteran of the Korean War having served honorably in the United States Air Force.

Mr. Mathis is survived by one brother, Joe Wayne Mathis of Benton; 3 grandchildren, Alisha Bailey and her husband Mikal of Benton, John Eric Phillips and his wife Tina of Louisville and Lindsey Haeger and her husband Jonathan of Franklin, Tennessee and seven great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 13 days to his wife of 63 years Rose Marie Mathis, two daughters, Sharon Mathis Phillips and Karen Mathis Davis, and sister, Darlese Prince.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday May 27 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of the Collier Funeral Home. Rev. Alan Miller officiated. Burial followed in Benton Cemetery.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made in memory of Mr. Mathis to the First Missionary Baptist Youth, 100 West 13th Street, Benton, KY 42025.
