I-24/69 interchange meeting slated

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has scheduled a public informational meeting to discuss alternatives for future changes to the Interstate 24/Julian M. Carroll-Purchase Parkway in Marshall County.

The interchange, at I-24 Exit 25 and Purchase Parkway Exit 52, will be upgraded from its current cloverleaf to a more traditional pattern to improve traffic flow and meet current Interstate standards to allow Interstate 69 to be extended along the Purchase Parkway. Reconstruction of the interchange is among several projects aimed at gaining approval for the expansion of I-69 through western Kentucky.

“We encourage anyone who travels through this interchange or lives in the area to attend this public meeting. It will be conducted in an informal format that allows participants to drop by, review the exhibits and materials, then provide comments,” said KYTC District 1 Chief Engineer Mike McGregor. “Public input will help us to design this new roadway to benefit the traveling public.”

Owners of the newly reopened Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway say they understand the impact of the state’s proposal to revamp the interchange is minimal to the track. The track is located on a 151-acre tract on the southeast corner of the present cloverleaf interchange.

Track co-owners Ronnie Jones and Jim Hale say they understand except for a maintenance shop on the northwest corner of the race track and the pit area ticket booth, no permanent structures on the speedway property will be affected.

A semi-trailer van in which a backup diesel generator is located is in the area earmarked for acquisition for the right-of-way and the generator, along with the wiring connections to the speedway power grid, will have to be relocated. Spectator entry will be altered as necessary, depending on relocation of the frontage road, and the pit entrance will have to be relocated. There is already a perimeter road around the south side of the track leading toward the pit area.

“From what I know of the plan, we will lose our entrance to the pit area and a little property west of there. We will have to relocate the generator trailer. We also own the water line along the frontage road. We will address all those issues, and we don’t anticipate any interruption of operations,” said Hale.

“We have plenty of property, but we need to make sure about restrictions so that we can expand to make up for what they take away from us. That’s our number one concern,” said Jones.

The meeting is scheduled for 5-7 p.m., CDT, Thursday, June 26, at the Calvert City Civic Center.

Displays illustrating some design options will be available for review. During the meeting, individuals will have the opportunity to discuss the preliminary plans with engineers, design staff and consultants.

KYTC District 1 Project Development Engineer Randy Williams said the project is tentatively scheduled for construction in 2016.

For those who may be unable to attend the June 26 public meeting, comments also may be submitted in writing before July 16, 2014, to Randy Williams, Branch Manager for Project Development, KYTC District 1 Office, 5501 Kentucky Dam Road, Paducah, KY, 42003.

Displays and materials presented at the public meeting will be available for review at the KYTC District 1 Office in Paducah during the same time period.
