Local enthusiasts took part in the Amateur Radio Relay League’s 24-hour Field Day Sunday.
The event is conducted each year to prepare so-called “ham” radio users for emergency conditions.
Operators work the airwaves to establish contact with as many other operators as they can.
With one hour to go in the exercise, the group, including Bill and Mary Husfield, Melissa Combs and Whipple Walker, had gotten in touch with 340 other “hams,” doubling the number they made last year.
Operators worked on radios and computers in the county’s Emergency Operations mobile command center, which was set up at Mike Miller Park in Draffenville.
