Comes with the territory of the so-called “mid-major” schools.
Most of us have some dream position that might tempt us, no matter how entrenched and comfortable we were, no matter how rewarding our present gig might be.
Even for guys like John Calipari and, before him, Rick Pitino, there were constant feelers (and even more unfounded rumors) about “greener pasture” opportunities.
Now, as we report today on page C5, Marshall County High School is searching for replacement coaches for next season.
Certainly, no one can hold it against Bill Thorpe, Patricia Greer or Shannon Gipson for opting to move on to new challenges.
But while we wish them well, we will hate to se them go. All three have done some excellent work with the student-athletes of Marshall County High School.
As for coaches Thorpe and Greer, they’re not out the door yet. Their teams have seasons to finish and good reason to have high expectations.
Note that our coaches are leaving for new career opportunities, not different coaching jobs.
Our loss is some potential candidate’s opportunity. MCHS has every right to expect a strong list of candidates.
Within the high school ranks, it would be hard to find greener pastures than these.
