CENTRAL CITY – Sophomore Austin Gordon set a school record in the 200-yard individual medley in a dual swim meet between Marshall County and host Muhlenberg County Jan. 24 at the Central City Convention Center.
Gordon swam the 200 IM in two minutes, 30.33 seconds, beating the previous MCHS mark of 2:30.84 set by Cale Merrick in 2010.
It was the second time in eight days that an MCHS record was eclipsed. Gordon and teammates Grant Park, David O’Rear and Paul Hudson erased the previous mark for the 400 freestyle relay Jan. 16 at the Paducah Athletic Club.
Individually, Gordon claimed one of nine first-place finishes for the Marshals and Lady Marshals at Central City.
He teamed with Park, O’Rear and Hudson for winning efforts in the 200 and 400 free relays.
In addition to the two relay wins, Hudson, a freshman, also won the 100 breaststroke.
Jessie Anderson, Sidney Jackson, Erika Darnell and Sarah Telle won the 400 free relay.
Other gold-medal finishes were logged by Anderson and Hudson, who swept girls’ and boys’ 50 free, and Telle and Park, winners in girls’ and boys’ 100 free.
Muhlenberg outpointed their opponents in both boys’ and girls’ competition in the final regular-season meet for Marshall County.
The Mustangs won 90-56 and the Lady Mustangs by a 113-51 score for a 203-107 overall tally.
Second-place finishes went to the Anderson-Jackson-Darnell-Telle quartet in the 200 free and 200 medley relays, plus Whitney Barrett in the 200 IM and Gordon in the 100 back.
Thirds were recorded by Park, in the 50 free; Grant Burgess, 100 back; Carli Merrick, 200 free; and Darnell, 100 butterfly.
Burgess, Coleton Jones, Landon Lindsey and Jacob Rushing took third in the boys 200 medley relay.
The regional meet is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, at Owensboro Health Park.
Qualifiers advance to the state meet Feb. 23-25 at the University of Louisville’s Wright Natatorium.
