She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for 20 years.
Mrs. Staples was a seamstress. She worked for Merritt Clothing and the Cigar Company of Benton.
A Marshall County native, she was the daughter of Isome E. Thweatt and Minnie Rose Thweatt. She was the wife of the late Hafford “Happy” Staples.
Surviving are daughters Linda Portis of Benton, Jan McCuiston of Murray and Sandy Genrick of Prior Lake, Minn; grandchildren Mitch Portis, Tim Graham and Ronecca Joseph of Benton, LaDon Berlin of Seattle, Wash., Kristi Hopkins of Murray, and Carin Morris, Brian Genrick and Kelly Hoerter of Minnesota; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers Raymond Thweatt, Bud Thweatt, Alus Thweatt and Headley Thweatt; and sisters Lillian Green and Ruby H. Treas.
The funeral service was Saturday, Nov. 24, at Collier Funeral Chapel. Rev. Terry Clapp, Rev. C.C. Brasher and Bro. Rodney Wallace officiated.
Interment followed at Murray Memorial Gardens.
