BENTON – In hopes of attracting new businesses, the Benton Planning and Zoning Board and city council have approved changes to city zoning.
Since February, the city has approved two changes. The first was at the corner of Main and Fourth streets. The property has been sought by developers for CVS Pharmacy.
But before the retailer could consider the site, it had to be changed from light industrial to commercial.
On March 19, the city took a similar action for property at the intersection of Mayfield Hwy. and the U.S. Hwy. 641 Bypass.
“This property has requested annexation,” said mayor Steve Cary. “Also, at the same time, they’re requesting the move from R1 to C2. All this came from planning and zoning.”
Zoning changes allowed the site to become commercial. It had previously been zoned for residential construction. The property is owned by David Henson.
“I think you’ll see some good things come out of this, as far as jobs and growth,” Cary said. The mayor said businesses had inquired about the property, but could not comment specifically as to which businesses.
