A church sign displayed last week by Faith Missionary Baptist Church on Hwy. 641 in Benton drew fire from members of the Marshall First group and even had those against the sale of alcohol shaking their heads.

The sign read “If You Think It’s Hot Now, Just Vote Yes. It first surfaced last Thursday and Pastor Bill Amberg said when he returned home from an out-of-town stay, he immediately took it down. He said a member of his church had put it up in his absence, but he declined to say who specifically.

“It was a mistake for that to be put on the sign. I apologize for it,” said Amberg.

Amberg said many in his congregation of 80 members were recently angered when both the church and the church bus were vandalized a few weeks ago. He said both were egged and letters from the sign were stolen, causing them to have to purchase over $300 in new lettering. Amberg also said the church has had gas stolen from the church bus.

“As soon as I saw the sign I took it down,” said Amberg. “It never should have been up there.”

Sissy Wommack, spokesperson for Marshall First was outraged by the sign’s message. “I thank the Lord that they are not my judge and that He knows our hearts,” she said.

Marshall County Sheriff Kevin Byars confirmed the church was vandalized several weeks ago at the same time another church, Briensburg Baptist was egged. He said since that weekend there have been no more reports to his office of vandalism.
