Calvert to seek bids for city hall repairs

CALVERT CITY – City Council voted unanimously Aug. 13 to proceed with repairs to City Hall, including a new roof covering and a remodeled main entrance.

The leaking roof and problems with the entrance to the 1970s-vintage building were to be addressed in an extensive revamping of the building, but that project was shelved earlier this year after bids for the project came in higher than expected.

At council members’ request, city administrator John Ward researched approximate costs for necessary repairs and modifications. Ward reported that a replacement rubber membrane could be installed, including removal of the old membrane and all other finish work, for approximately $115,000.

A new metal roof to replace the present flat roof would cost more than $150,000, Ward said. That cost did not include adaptations for to the building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, soffit and facia and other details.

He reported an estimated $50,000 cost for replacement of the present ramp entryway with a new ramp plus a walk-up approach for clients who are not disabled.

The city will solicit formal bids for both projects and take action when they are received.

In other action:

n Council suspended action to purchase a new side-load sanitation truck and accepted the request of Public Works Director Brad Darnall to hire an additional employee.

The new truck would have been operated by a single person instead of a two-man crew and would have negated the need for an additional worker. Darnall relayed concerns that have been addressed to him about the new truck.

Darnall asked that the new position be filled by someone who can handle general maintenance duties at the Calvert Area Fire Training Center and other collateral duties.

n First reading was heard of an ordinance providing for the appointment of members of the Marshall County-Calvert Riverport Authority to staggered four-year terms.

n Low bid of $242,997 from Murray Paving for the city’s scheduled road repaving projects during this fiscal year was accepted. Council members agreed to negotiate with the bidder to utilize the full $300,000 budgeted for paving projects.

n A request from Marshall County to participate in a project to widen McFarlan Road as part of an upgrade of the riverport was accepted. A $1 million grant is paying for the project, so there is no initial cost to be covered by local government.

n A new three-year contract with Pyrotechnic Display Inc. of Springfield, Ky., was approved. The company will provide fireworks displays at a cost of $8,000 per year.

Fire Chief Fred Ross recommended approval of the proposal, which represents a $500 increase over the previous long-standing agreement.
