Freshman Maddie Ortt is the first Christian Fellowship athlete to qualify for the All “A” state golf tournament.

Ortt will advance to the small-school tourney on Sept. 6 in Springfield.

She earned the spot in the Region 1 tournament Friday at Silos Golf Course in Kevil.

Mayfield claimed the boys team title and Murray, which fielded the only full girls team, won that title by default.

Devany Cope of Mayfield was the individual girls medalist and will advance.

Her 73 was low score for the tournament among all competitors. Murray’s James Boone shot a 74 to earn boys medalist honors.

The final spot among individual qualifiers was decided in a battle among five girls, CFS coach Billy Hodge said.

“It came down to a 10-foot putt that had to be made by Maddie Ortt on the final hole,” Hodge said.

Ortt made the putt and finished with a score of 95, edging St. Mary’s Margarette Butts by one stroke.

Hodge said Ortt “hits the ball very well off the tee,” but has struggled with her chipping and putting.

“She’s really been working on that and it’s keeping her scores down,” he said.

Hodge said the Eagle and Lady Eagle golfers have been practicing with a two-putt limit on all holes.

“That’s what really saved her at Silos,” Hodge said. “She was two-putting just about every hole.”

On Aug. 11, CFS defeated Dawson Springs 195-225 in a co-ed match at Calvert City Country Club.

Campbell Knoth led the Eagles wtih a round of 45.

THIS WEEK: Marshall County entertains Mayfield at the Benton Country Club this afternoon.

On Saturday, the Marshal boys play in the Ballard Invitational at the Ballard Country Club in LaCenter while the Lady Marshals will be in the Madison Central Invitational at Battlefield Golf Club in Richmond.

CFS was scheduled to play Fulton County on Monday at Calvert City Country Club. That was the only action of the week for the team.
