The truck is owned by Waste Path of Calvert City. A Marshall County deputy at the scene said the fire apparently began in the truck's engine. The driver was not injured by the fire and no other vehicles were damaged.
Chief Harry Green, of the Benton Fire Department, said the fire spread to the truck's trash compartment. Firefighters were able to extinguish the engine fire. Unable to empty the trash compartment, the fire continued to burn garbage. Firefighters used foam to suppress the fire. A wrecker was used to tow the truck to Waste Path at 1637 Shar-Cal Road with firefighter escort. The blaze was extinguished at this location.
Motorists were diverted at Exit 47 and used U.S. 68 or U.S. 641 to continue to I-24.
Firefighters from the Palma-Briensburg, Gilbertsville, East Marshall County, Benton, Calvert City and Possum Trot fire departments worked to extinguish the truck. They were assisted by the Marshall County Rescue Squad, Sheriff's Department, Kentucky State Police and the Department of Highways Safe Patrol.
