Whether you refer to it as soda, pop or just plain coke, a flavored carbonated beverage is an American favorite and has been since the late 1800’s.

There are literally thousands of flavors, but Su Feston, owner of the Hitching Post in Aurora says, “Nothing beats the originals and you can’t beat soda out of a glass bottle.”

Feston started carrying glass-bottled soda in her old-time-country store a few years back. She said last year’s stock of 80 different soda flavors has grown to 150 this year and she has plans to continue expanding the variety.

Soda flavors that can be found at The Hitching post include fruit-themed, ginger ales, colas and of course, root beers. A handful of soda flavors in the store date back to the 1800’s and nearly all of them have stuck to their original recipes. Some of the more interesting flavors involve cucumbers, celery and prickly pears.

“You might look at a flavor and think, ‘I would never like that’ or ‘that sounds gross,’ but once people try it they usually change their mind.”

To give her customers a chance to sample some of the more exotic and obscure flavors, Feston has started hosting the All American Soda Showdown on Thursday evenings. The tasting parties will continue through August 18.

Feston will feature different soda flavors each week, with nine fruit flavors and nine root beers on the menu. For $4.95 you will be able to sample the featured sodas and receive an official Hitching Post shot glass. Single bottles are also available for sale, as well as 4-packs, 6-packs and cases.

“Soda is appealing to everyone, young and old,” Feston said, “It’s fun to see the kid’s faces light up when they try the different flavors and it’s fun to see adults get excited about soda they can’t find anymore.”

The Hitching Post is located at 16474 US Hwy 68 E in Aurora. For more information visit their website, www.hitchingpost.us or phone 270-474-2266.
