Benton resident dies in Sunday accident

A Benton resident died Sunday afternoon and several others sustained injuries following an accident that involved a tractor-trailer and two other vehicles.

The accident, which occurred at the US 641 Spur intersection with KY 58/Mayfield Highway, led to the death of Mavis Geraldine Darnell, 86, who was airlifted from the scene of the accident by an Air Evac Lifeteam to a Nashville hospital where she succumb to her injuries.

According to information provided by the Benton Police Department, the collision was reported at 8:49 a.m.

Police said Willard Darnell, 89, of Benton, was driving northbound on US 641 when he attempted to turn left onto KY Hwy. 58.

Darnell turned into the path of the tractor-trailer, which was driven by Larry Harville, of McKenzie, Tenn. Harville attempted to avoid the collision by turning to the right, but pushed the Darnell vehicle into a third car driven by Janet Housman, of Benton, who also had juveniles in the car.

Willard Darnell and Housman, as well as the two juveniles, were transported by Marshall County Emergency Medical Services to the Marshall County Hospital for injuries sustained during the accident.

Willard Mavis was later airlifted to Nashville where he remains hospitalized. The extent of his injuries in unknown.

The intersection where the accident occurred was blocked for approximately two hours while initial investigations and cleanup began. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office will continue the accident reconstruction investigation.

The Benton Police Department was assisted by Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Marshall County EMS, Benton Fire Department, Marshall County Rescue Squad, and Palma Briensburg Fire Department.
