Staff Report

BENTON – Benton Gas customers are getting an early Christmas present. With temperatures dropping outside, customers using the city’s gas for heating can expect to see a drop in rates.

Starting with the Nov. 1 billing period, rates dropped from $8.50 per thousand feet to $8. The dropping rate reflects savvy purchasing by Benton Gas Manager Kelly Collins.

Currently, Benton Gas serves nearly 6,000 customers. The service is expected to move into its new facility next to Leon Riley Ford in coming months. The move was in response to its growing customer base– nearly 200 customers per year recently– and deteriorating conditions at its maintenance facility. In previous city council meetings, city leaders had also discussed cramped working space for all services currently operating out of city hall.

Plans for the $1.3 million facility were unveiled in April.
