Alton Powell, 89, of Benton died Sunday, Dec. 23, at his residence.

Mr. Powell was retired from TVA and was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. He served in the Army during World War II.

He was the son of Robert Lee Powell and Lilley Farley Powell.

He is survived by his wife, Maudene Ham Powell of Benton; daughters Linda Thompson and Joyce Hill, both of Benton; sons Terry Powell and Donald Powell of Benton and Freddy Powell of Reidland; sisters Lucille Young of Kuttawa, Willie Mae Taylor of Benton and Janis Kay Duncan of Murray; brothers Everett Powell of Benton and Billy Ray Powell of Puryear, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Mildred Parrott, Dorothy Mae Holland and Judy Ann Ross and brothers William Powell, Junior Powell, Cecil Powell and Raymond Powell.

The funeral service was Wednesday, Dec. 26, at Collier Funeral Chapel. Rev. C.C. Brasher, Rev. Mike Littrell and Rev. Rodney Wallace officiated. Interment was at New Zion Cemetery.
