Marshall County will soon welcome a new “box” or gym, unlike any other. 270 CrossFit will be open and conducting classroom-style workouts by April 1. CrossFit classes are being brought to Marshall County by Joshua Hendrickson.

Hendrickson started CrossFit after about seven years of going on and off to the gym and falling off the workout-wagon time and time again. He wanted a change. After researching CrossFit, he tried it by himself in his garage for close to two months.

“It was good, but it’s not what CrossFit is all about.” he explained, “What’s different and what I love the most, is the community with CrossFit. It may be 10, 12 or 40 other people going through the same feeling you are and they are encouraging you and want to see you finish,” said Hendrickson.

Crossfit is constantly varied-functional moment-performed at high intensity. “All the movements and the strength you build is all applied in the real world,” Hendrickson explained.

A regular training session is about an hour long. It happens in a group setting starting with stretching then a dynamic warm-up, which is a period where you work on strength or gymnastics techniques. Those techniques will be performed at that session’s WOD, which is the Workout of the Day, followed by a cool down.

During the WOD the intensity, sweat and occasional fear comes into play.

It can last anywhere from 3 - 45 minutes. You may be performing pull-ups, squats, or burpees. You may have 20 - 90 pound weights. You may be running one to four miles. Each day is different and no one knows until they arrive. But you will always be working for the fastest time possible and striving to perform better.

“You watch the videos online and think, no way- there’s no way I could do this. Maybe you can’t do exactly what those people are doing but that doesn’t mean you can’t go through the movements,” Hendrickson said. CrossFit is about making it intense for you, everything is “scaleable” and you have to push yourself.

Through the month of December, three of Hendrickson’s friends joined him and together they learned more about the program and how to teach it to others. Hendrickson along with, Cory Jessup and Anthony Schmitt are now all certified Level 1 CrossFit trainers. They have also recruited more people to join and last week Hendrickson’s garage held 42 people, all participating and making an effort to better themselves.

“It’s intense, people are pushing you nonstop. It’s not just about making yourself better but about making the team better.” Matt Willie, of Benton, said. He started participating in CrossFit in January and has since lost 40 pounds, “It’s addicting.”

“Anybody can do CrossFit. Once you get into the (CrossFit) community and people are cheering you on, you’re going to find a whole new pace you never knew you had,” Hendrickson said. “For the people who think it is too hard for them, they just need to try it once.”

The gym will open by April 1 and is located at 1448 Briensburg Road. Although CrossFit is the main focus, other classes such as Zumba, Yoga and Tabata will be offered as well.
